Course Description:

It is estimated that there are 7.5 medical emergencies per dentist over a 10-year period in a typical dental office. Incidents could occur at any time and calling 911 is not enough – dentists and team members must be ready for the unexpected. Sometimes seconds or minutes may be all you have to save a life, therefore it is vital that dentists can proficiently diagnose and provide initial management for life threatening conditions until EMS arrives. Effective management of medical events involves a coordinated dental team, specific drugs, and skills in the provision of airway and cardiovascular support. This course leverages case-based learning to teach the initial management of acute life-threatening emergencies involving the cardiac respiratory endocrine and neurological systems. The session will finish with exercises in team dynamics to demonstrate how coordinated teams can work most effectively together and optimize crisis management.

Audience: Dentists and teams

Key Learning Objectives:

• Describe the steps necessary to prevent a medical crisis before it happens
• Explore a singular simplified approach to every kind of medical emergency for all dental patients including the medically compromised
• Observe and physically assess a patient’s vital signs
• Distinguish between conditions that require immediate action and those that necessitate timely stabilization
• Recognize emergency life-saving drugs with respect to pharmacology and practical use in alleviating a medical crisis
• Basic life support concepts and techniques will be reviewed

• Speakers and a microphone – built-in, USB plug-in, or wireless Bluetooth
• A webcam or HD webcam - built-in, USB plug-in, or:
  • An HD cam or HD camcorder with a video-capture card
  • Note: see list of supported devices
• Virtual camera software for use with broadcasting software like OBS or IP cameras. Note: For macOS, Zoom client 5.1.1 or higher is required
