Seminar Topic: Effective Moderate Conscious Sedation: Oral Sedation and Nitrous Oxide

Speaker: Dr. Sangeeta Patodia

Course Description:

Stress-free dentistry may sound like an oxymoron to some anxious patients. However, nitrous oxide and benzodiazepines are proven to be safe and effective sedative tools that can make stress-free dentistry a reality for many anxious dental patients. The introduction of a new service in your clinical practice requires extra training for yourself and your team along with the appropriate armamentarium. The successful completion of this course will provide participants certification in oral moderate sedation in Ontario. Additionally, participants will learn how to integrate sedation into the dental practice in an efficient, organized, and safe manner.

The use of oral sedatives and nitrous oxide as a single agent and in combination to obtain minimal to oral moderate conscious sedation will be reviewed. Learning will be provided in a series of lectures, case-based scenarios, required readings, hands-on use of applicable equipment and drugs and clinical application of nitrous oxide sedation. Participants will leave the course with the confidence to safely and effectively deliver minimal to moderate conscious sedation to their dental patients.

Audience: Dentists

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Define the drug induced continuum of sedation with emphasis on the differences between minimal/moderate conscious sedation and deep sedation
  • Patient evaluation: medical assessment, physical diagnosis and psychological factors to determine an effective sedation plan
  • Ability to select the correct sedative agent(s) based upon the patient and specific dental procedure(s)
  • Describe alternative sedative techniques for difficult patients and review specific criteria to discern which patients require referral for other types of sedation
  • Review the anatomy and physiology of adult respiratory and circulatory systems as they relate to sedation
  • Describe the pharmacology of oral and inhalational drugs selected for administration from a clinical perspective relating to its mechanism of action, bioavailability and half life
  • Monitor sedated patients through observation, vital signs, conscious/unconscious reflexes, monitors and equipment
  • Provide airway maintenance and support of the respiratory and cardiovascular systems
  • Use inhalation sedation equipment, monitors and adjunctive emergency equipment for moderate sedation
  • Identify and treat emergencies related to the next deeper state of sedation
  • Obtain clinical experience in the administration of nitrous oxide - oxygen
