Seminar Topic: Pocket Reduction & Gingival Augmentation
Speaker: Dr. Sam Malkinson
Pocket ReductionHaving diagnosed your patient with periodontitis, you have taken them through Phase I non-surgical therapy. At the re-evaluation appointment, you realize you still have residual deep pockets, all of which are bleeding. You know the patient will need surgical intervention to address their remaining issues. Are you ready to take the next step, and do it?
In this half-day course, participants will be exposed to the full range of osseous resective surgical techniques for pocket reduction. With fresh pig jaws as our “patients”, participants will learn the A to Z of resective surgery, from incisions and flap design, through to osseous resection, and finally closing up using different suturing techniques. Whether you incorporate surgery daily in your practice or refer everything out, this course will take your knowledge and skills to the next level.
Course Learning Objectives:
- Participants will learn the indications and contraindications for pocket reduction surgery
- Participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to perform a simple pocket reduction surgery
- Participants will understand post-operative management and expected outcomes of pocket reduction surgery
Gingival Augmentation
You see a patient to treatment plan a large restorative case. The patient is very motivated. When checking the patient’s supporting tissues, you notice they have no attached gingiva, a shallow vestibule, and a generally thin periodontal phenotype. Can this patient still be helped?
Welcome to DCI’s hands-on course, Gingival Augmentation! With the help of some fresh pig jaws acting as our “patients”, participants will learn the technique of free gingival grafting for gingival augmentation. Using both submarginal and sulcular approaches, participants will learn how to manage a wide variety of mucogingival disorders, and also how to avoid the complications often associated with this procedure.
Course Learning Objectives:
- Participants will learn the indications and contraindications for gingival augmentation
- Participants will acquire the knowledge and techniques necessary to perform simple gingival augmentation around teeth
- Participants will learn how to identify and manage complications associated with gingival augmentation
